Muga Rioja Blanco 2006

This is what I love about wine clubs.  You get to try stuff that you would never buy on your own.  This white Rioja is a blend of Viura and Malvasia.  Lemon, citrus, vanilla.  Good flowery nose.  Slightly oaked with good acid.  A great alternative to the usual chardonnay with an exotic flair.  Reminds me [...]

Buy-backs

Gun Buyback Misfires
The police offered up to $250 for a gun “no questions asked, no ID required.”  The first people in line?  Two gun dealers from Reno with 60 cheap handguns.

Let’s see… $250 times 60 guns = $15,000.  That’s a heckuvalota cash sitting around when there are a bunch of guys WITH GUNS standing [...]

Kaho‘olawe newsletter

Latest news letter is here.
I can remember all of the planting holes we dug and the effort it took to bust up the hard-pan in the summer of ‘07.  If I remember correctly, we were planting on the right side of the image below (images courtesy of Microsoft Virtual Earth).

Which is roughly here:

All [...]

Open DNS

I changed to OpenDNS on the family router last month.  I don’t know if it really speeds things up significantly, but it does seem a touch faster.  No matter.  What I really like is blocking suspicious phishing web sites.  So I don’t worry about that security headache as much.
It’ll also do content filtering.  Not bullet [...]

Siduri Lewis Vineyard 2006

OK.  Couldn’t find a good image of the label….
This is a great Pinot Noir.  So classic.  Silky, smooth, elegant.  Great fresh red fruit.  Lots going on.  Color was a nice ruby red with a little bit of brownish tint.  Long finish.  Thankfully, I have more bottles of this so it’ll be great to see how [...]

Yangarra McLaren Vale Shiraz 2006

Intense and concentrated.  White pepper, dried fruit, powerful.  Spicy.  Highly extracted and big.  At around $20, this is a great example of Australian Shiraz.  Jammy.  Long finish.  An almost lemon/waxy nose.  I might be influenced by the Aussie origins or the label, but I almost get a eucalyptus note as well.
Would go really well [...]

Freezing RAM chips to crack encryption…

Why is this a hard thing to understand?  If the bad guy wants to crack your computer, one immutable rule is that if you do not have physical control over your computer, the computer is no longer yours.  Just like if a bad guy wants to get you and you don’t have physical control over [...]

Erath Pinot Noir 2006

One of my favorite “house” Pinots.  Meaning that if I needed to grab a bottle on my way to a party and needed the confidence of a good wine that would please most people, this is it.  Great value - it lists at around $20, but I got it much cheaper with the good old [...]

Mariposa (Honolulu) and Duckhorn "Decoy"

Can’t remember the vintage.  I think it was the 2005.  The restaurant billed it as a Cabernet Sauvignon, but it is actually a blend of  Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, making it more of a Bordeaux blend than a Napa Cab.  But, with Cabernet Sauvignon as the largest proportion, I suppose it [...]

Ravenswood Vinters Reserve Zinfandel 2006

I had forgotten about this one.  I think it is a great price point for a really nice everyday zinfandel.  Approachable and without big tannins.  Good red fruit and quite ripe.  Not sweet, but ripe.  Very drinkable with some firmness and finish.  Much better than the Mirassou Pinot.
I paired it with an Italian sausage pasta [...]
